Michla e Feiv’ke Schwarz, sorella e fratello, potevano rincontrarsi a Lodz nel 1945. Potevano, ma non è successo. Lei è immigrata nello Stato Ebraico in Medioriente, lui è tornato in Germania, cambiando in suo nome in Peter e sposando una donna tedesca, per poi vivere tutta la vita nello stesso campo dove fu tenuto prigioniero durante la guerra.
Due famiglie, una in Germania una in Israele, si specchiano e si confrontano, pur avendo sempre ignorato l’esistenza dell’altra. Addio Peter Scwartz costruisce e demolisce il mito della famiglia e propone una nuova visione dei racconti famigliari. Il film ha vinto tra gli altri il premio per il Miglior documentario allo Haifa IFF 2013, il premio per il Migliore Film Tedesco al Berlin Jewish Film Festival 2014, il premio al Miglior Regista esordiente al Toronto Jewish Film Festival 2014.
Brother and sister Feiv’ke and Michla Schwarz, could have been reunited in Lodz in 1945. They could have met, but it never happened. Michla emigrated to the new Jewish state in the Middle East, while Feiv’ke returned to Germany, changed his name to Peter and married a German woman. He spent the rest of his life living in the ruins of the concentration camp where he was imprisoned during the war.
Two families, one in Germany and one in Israel, are strangely mirrored, even though each was unaware of the existence of the other. Farewell Herr Schwarz constructs a family myth, to then deconstruct it and propose a new perspective on the importance of family stories. Awards won by the film include Best Documentary at the 2013 Haifa IFF, the prize for Best German Documentary at the Berlin Jewish Film Festival 2014 and the David A. Stein Memorial Award for Best Documentary at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival in 2014.
